Aldo and Steve trek through the jungle and come across a cenote. Cenotes are believed by the Maya to be portals into an underworld called Xibalba.

Travel to the Guiana Shield with Steve Backshall, whose mission is to discover its abundance of wildlife and natural wonders. He travels deep into the untouched jungle, finding animals that have never encountered humans.

The crew spots a lone polar bear wandering toward their camp in search of food. Hoping to avoid injury between either party, they use marine flares, loud noises and rocks in hopes that they’ll scare it off.

As the team begins kayaking along the longest fjord system on the planet, they go over safety precautions for their trip. The ice is constantly moving and can quickly close up pathways in the water. The group must stay in close visual proximity to one another to ensure no one is left behind.

Join Steve Backshall in the foothills of the Himalaya, where he plans to kayak the last unrun river in Bhutan, which runs through the country’s steepest gorge. Before his attempt, Steve seeks blessing from a local Buddhist monastery.

Steve and Aldo film the wildlife and landscape of Oman during their abseil training as they prepare for their trek through the unexplored canyon. As they work their way toward the camera crew, which will be joining them at a separate location, we get a glimpse of their surroundings through their eyes in this day three video diary.

Despite being one of the driest places on Earth, water has played a large role in shaping Oman’s landscape. The infrequent but powerful rainfalls have carved out deep canyons across the country.

During an abseil, the Expedition team stumbles upon a saw-scaled viper hiding at the bottom of their ropes. With a fast-acting, powerful venom, it’s one of the most dangerous species of snake on the planet, and the crew must navigate around it.

Steve is joined by whitewater kayakers Darren Clarkson-King, Sal Montgomery, James Bebbington and Chencho Drukpa, to help ensure a safe passage through Bhutan’s intense rapids. Before beginning their expedition, they survey their route by land to get a better sense of what they might encounter along their journey, including dangerous “stoppers” which can pull kayakers underwater.

The team spends three days in the jungle searching for caves with their local guide. The terrain is so extreme that the Royal Marines learn their survival skills here. Aldo, a former Royal Marine looks back on his training in Borneo.

Steve prepares for his first training dive and tests out his equipment with the help of expert divers Robbie Schmittner and Bernadette Carrion van Rijn. The team carries double, and sometimes even triple, of everything as they rely solely on their equipment during a cave dive.

The Expedition team meets with workers supervising an illegal mining operation in Suriname. In order to separate gold from the sediment, the miners use mercury, which is extremely poisonous to the humans and animals that it comes in contact with.

Steve and Aldo meet trail cutters who will join them on their trek through the Surniname rainforest. They learn that walking to the closest village could take months, discovering just how far they are from civilization.

After a long day of travel on the water, Steve and Aldo take a moment to appreciate the environment around them before sunset.

After kayaking through the fjord for an hour, Steve, Aldo and Sarah stop to eat and hydrate. They need to take on 6,000 calories each day to stay warm and fuel themselves for the remainder of their journey.

As they prepare for their expedition in Greenland, Aldo helps pack the kayaks while Steve and Sarah attempt to get a better look at the fjord conditions. When they arrive at a vantage point to view their route, they see that it’s obstructed by a cloud inversion.
