Pure Confidence by Theatrical Outfit
March 4, 2008
Insider Edition met in the evening on Tuesday, March 4 at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s, home of Theatrical Outfit. The first goal of Insider Edition is to be a social event where our Cornerstone members (a donation of $1,000 or more per year) and their guests can meet and enjoy each other’s company. The second goal is to get an inside view of upcoming programs and events from both WABE 90.1FM and PBA30 and to support other cultural events around Atlanta.
About 100 Cornerstone members and their guests met prior to the show for a reception and a tour of this special theater. Tom Key, the executive artistic director, conducted the tour and showed us why this theater is regarded as the first green theater in the United States.
Pure Confidence was a provocative play based on the lives of slave jockeys during the middle of the nineteenth century. The first act portrayed the attitudes of both the jockey and his southern owners prior to the civil war. The second act was set in 1877, about twelve years after war. Despite the end of the war and emancipation, we saw that the attitudes and the relationships between the now freed slaves and their previous owners were still very much the same.
The theater was filled with PBA friends. After the show the cast returned to the stage with the director and answered questions from the audience. This sparked a lively discussion around the main themes of the production. It was a great evening!
