Tour of Southeastern Flower Show (1/28/09)
On Wednesday afternoon, January 28 Cornerstone members and guests gathered at the Southeastern Flower Show for a chance to see some of our region’s finest landscape design, floral arrangements, tips and ideas for gardeners at all levels, and much more. Candy Johnson, Chair of the 2009 show, and Kate Chura, Executive Director of the Southeastern Horticultural Society, spoke to the group first to explain a little about the show. Then everyone broke into smaller groups led by guides, all of whom were past Chairs of the show and very knowledgeable.
The show included several large landscape designs, an area dedicated to organic gardening and environmentally friendly landscaping, and competitions for best orchid, succulent, floral design, and many more. The floral arrangements were delightful — imagine blossoms arranged like an ice cream cone, a red velvet cake, or a dress! The demonstration of a grass roof was also intriguing, seeing how the water is recycled and understanding how efficient it would be heating and cooling a building. The landscapes were truly inspiring. Each one was a world unto itself, with fountains, stone paths, trees, flowers — and in one case a grill, an oven, sink, and a television — a true extension of the home into the outdoors!
An extra treat was a performance by Atlanta Opera singers toward the end of the evening!
Everyone enjoyed a little bit of spring and summer in the depth of winter!
