Australian Bakery Café Mural

The mural installed on the large brick wall flanking the Australian Bakery Café in East Atlanta infuses images of traditional Aboriginal culture with motifs representing the people of East Atlanta. “Bringing nations, culture and communities together,” was the concept for the mural commissioned by Australian Bakery Café and designed by Dr. Pamela Croft, Australia’s first Aboriginal doctor of fine art. Dr. Croft started the mural by outlining the main elements of her design and members of the East Atlanta community, including local and international dignitaries worked together to complete the mural. Members of the East Atlanta Kids Club and other local children were invited to participate and learn about Aboriginal history, including the dark period in the last century when indigenous people were imprisoned and forcibly removed from native areas and “assimilated” into European society.

Dr. Croft’s work depicting Aboriginal history and culture has been displayed in Australia, internationally, and locally at Chances Gallery (next door to the cafe) in East Atlanta.
