John and Susan Wieland

John Wieland is Chairman and Chief Creative Officer (CCO) of John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods. As CCO he is responsible for the company’s strategic vision as well as the architectural integrity of its neighborhoods and homes. In his first year in the home building industry he built 20 homes. Now 35 years and more than 25,000 satisfied homeowners later, he has firmly established John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods as the Southeast’s leading builder of semi custom homes, with more than 1000 full-time employees and thousands of trade contractors. Besides Atlanta, the company builds in Charleston, South Carolina, Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee and Louisville, Kentucky.
He and his company have received more than 500 awards for excellence. Mr. Wieland has been named National Builder of the Year by Professional Builder Magazine, and the company has received the National Housing Quality award presented by the National Association of Home Builders Research Center. BUILDER Magazine named the company “America’s Best Builder” in 2005. He has served the home building industry at the local, state and national level, receiving the top awards for his contributions. In 2002 he was presented the Hearthstone BUILDER Lifetime Public Service Award.
John has always been involved in a number of volunteer activities. He is past Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Emory University Center for Ethics and the Emory Board of Visitors as well as a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He has served on the Board of Directors of the High Museum of Art since 1988 and was its Chair for three years. He recently chaired the High Museum of Art’s Building Committee for an expanded campus, which was designed by the noted Italian Architect, Renzo Piano. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees and Treasurer of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, a division of the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, DC. He currently serves on the Piedmont Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
He has received numerous civic awards including being named to the Georgia State University Robinson College of Business Hall of Fame and the Atlanta Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame. John graduated from Amherst College and the Harvard Business School. He has received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Amherst College.
Susan Wieland serves as Secretary of Corporation for John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods and is involved in community outreach and special projects. Susan’s community outreach involvement is extensive, serving on the Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, and Advisory Councils of numerous non-profit organizations for many years. They include the Atlanta Women’s Foundation; Habitat for Humanity; Atlanta Community Foundation; Families First; Atlanta Children’s Shelter; Communities in Schools (formerly EXODUS, Inc); The Alliance Theatre; Junior League of Atlanta; Woodruff Arts Center; Columbia Theological Seminary; The Westminster Schools; Hands On Atlanta?Advisory Council; and Friends of Spelman College. Susan has served on the Board of Deacons of North Avenue Presbyterian Church and is a member of Leadership Atlanta, Class of 1986. Susan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College in Norton, MA.
John and his wife Susan live in Atlanta and have two grown children and two grandchildren.
