Learning to Read after 3rd Grade

Listen here »

The dynamics of teaching young children to read has always been a bit of a mystery to most parents. Some believe that children learn to read when they are ready. Others believe that given the right instruction, children will learn as much as the teacher can teach. Most parents agree that by a certain age, kids should be reading. When children aren’t reading by third grade, many parents become concerned. But, parents should become concerned long before their child reaches third grade.

Research shows until third grade, children learn to read. Beginning in fourth grade, children read to learn. Children reading below grade level, by fourth grade, often have a difficult time in most academic areas.

When children miss early reading skills, although not impossible, it’s difficult for them to learn them after fourth grade. As a parent, there’re several things you can do to ensure that your child benefits from early reading instruction, such as:

  • First, if possible, be sure to enroll your child in early learning opportunities, especially kindergarten.
  • Next, begin playing letter and word games with your children when they are babies.
  • Next, review homework and reading skill lessons with your child on a regular basis, especially between kindergarten and third grades. Next, talk to your child often. Allow him to make up stories and use their imagination. Finally, speak with the teacher about your child’s reading performance on a regular basis.

It’s not impossible for children or adults to learn to read after fourth grade, but when children become good readers early, they’re more likely to become better learners for the rest of their school years and beyond.
