The unseasonably warm weather has caused some plants to start blooming prematurely, causing unusually high pollen counts for the month of February. That got us wondering who actually counts pollen…and how. WABE’s Myke Johns tracked down the one place in Metro Atlanta that does it, the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic up in Marietta.

A partially-edible toy piano. A keyboard whose keys move in-and-out as well as up-and-down. Those wishing to see strange new instruments like these, among others, flocked to last week’s Margaret Guthman Competition, hosted by Georgia Tech. Now in its fourth year, the competition annually attracts inventors from around the world to present apparatuses that challenge the very idea of what music-making means.
WABE’s Kate Sweeney went, and brought back this report.

High Museum: The Art of Golf

A new exhibit at The High Museum of Art is designed to appeal to both the artistically curious and the sports enthusiast. The exhibit is called “The Art of Golf,” and WABE’s David Barasoain has this report.

77-year-old Christina Gross grew up in North Dakota, and never planned to leave. But then a job opportunity beckoned her husband. At StoryCorps, Christina told her granddaughter, Jennifer Swope, how it all started—when her husband went on a trip east.

The year is 1952, and a little girl and her family are making a cross-country drive to visit family. But in the days of the Jim Crow South, a simple trip away from home could prove dangerous for minority Americans. That’s the subject of a play now on the stage at the Center for Puppetry Arts. Ruth and the Green Book is based on the children’s book of the same name, by Calvin Ramsey. WABE’s Kate Sweeney went to the premiere, and sat down to tell us about it.
