Today marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind. The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel has since been translated into over forty languages for a readership that continues to grow.
Here at home, the Atlanta History Center has preserved Margaret Mitchell’s apartment. WABE’s Myke Johns paid them a visit to see where the enduring novel was written.

Georgia History - Atlanta’s Great Fire of 1917

Ninety four years ago, on May twenty-first, a warehouse fire on Atlanta’s east side caused the Great Fire of 1917. We met up with Dr. Tim Crimmins, Director of the Center for Neighborhood and Metropolitan Studies at Georgia State University at the historic Fire Station #6 on Auburn Avenue, which stood directly in the path of the destruction to learn more about the extent of the conflagration.
The Atlanta History Center’s archives have some fascinating images of the aftermath of the disaster.
Fools for Love

Now on stage at True Colors Theatre is Sam Shepherd’s Fool for Love, a gritty play about a 20-year old dysfunctional relationship between two dynamic individuals. Playing these two are none other than Kenny Leon and Jasmine Guy. WABE’s Lois Reitzes sat down with the actors turned directors turned actor-directors for a chat about this production.

Martin Levin grew up during the Great Depression and remembers his family losing just about everything. Still, Martin went on to be successful, first as a teacher and serving in the army and then eventually running world-wide publishing houses. Now, at 92, Martin is still working. He told his story to his adult granddaughters Zo� Levin Crowe and Jennifer Goebel.
Mike Luckovich

For the last 20-years Mike Luckovich has been drawing editorial cartoons for the Atlanta Journal Constitution. His cartoons have garnered wide praise and at times deep criticism. But his work is noticed. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in both 1995 and 2006. WABE’s David Barasoain produced this profile.

Stone Mountain Carving Caretaker

If you happen to be one of the many visitors to Stone Mountain Park this summer you might notice that the carving on the side of mountain looks a bit cleaner these days. The Confederate Memorial Carving, as it’s known, features three confederate leaders of the Civil War. In order they are Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson. WABE’s David Barasoain introduces us to the man whose job it is to clean the carving.
