Matthew Kaminski: The Man Behind the Organ at Turner Field

Turner Field, home of The Atlanta Braves, may be a state-of-the-art park, with giant LED screens and an enormous sound system, but the sound of the traditional organ can still be heard pumping up the crowd as players make their way to the batter’s box. We paid a visit to meet Matthew Kaminski, the man behind the keys.

April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and WABE is lucky enough to have an in-house authority on the genre in H. Johnson, who’s been doing his Saturday night program “Jazz Classics,” since the late 1970s. Recently we had a conversation with H. about his show, how he got into jazz in the first place, and how you know when it really does have that swing.

Back in January, we covered the surreal soiree at the High Museum as they closed out their Dali exhibition. Among the crowds were all manner of strange circus acts—stilt walkers, contortionists, bizarre puppets, and a fire dancer. As it turned out, those performers were part of the Imperial Opa Circus. WABE’s Myke Johns paid a visit to one of their rehearsals, and brought back this profile.

Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre is known for provocative work that pushes the envelope, and their latest production is no exception. George Wolfe’s satire, The Colored Museum, takes a hard yet humorous look at African American culture and stereotypes over the past two hundred years. The director of the show is Atlanta’s own Jasmine Guy, who spoke with WABE’s Lois Reitzes about the play.
