This winter’s got at least a few more chilly days left, and this weekend’s Superbowl is a great excuse to cook up one last batch of hearty soup. Host John Lemley went to the home of food writer Helen Cauley for hands-on instruction on a fresh version of a perennial favorite. John started out by asking Helen how an inexperienced cook might move from the old red-and-white can, to homemade. Produced by Kate Sweeney.

Alon’s Tomato Basil Soup
1 large carrot, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1 white onion, diced
8-10 tomatoes (depending on size,) chopped
1 T garlic, chopped
8 leaves basil, chopped
1 cup heavy cream
salt and pepper to taste
Add some oil to a stock pot over low heat. Cook garlic, carrots, celery and white onion until tender (5-7 minutes). Add tomatoes and cook for approximately 7 more minutes until tomatoes start breaking down. Add cream and bring to simmer for 10 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and basil. Puree in blender (or use an immersion blender).

Toulouse-Lautrec at the High

You are likely familiar with the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, even if you don’t know who he is. The posters he created toward the end of the 19th century, which portray the Parisian nightlife of cabaret singers and dancers of the Moulin Rouge have been reprinted and sold all the way up to the present day. But right now, the High Museum is exhibiting the original lithographs in “Toulouse-Lautrec & Friends: The Irene And Howard Stein Collection” through May 1st. WABE’s Lois Reitzes took a tour of the exhibit and has this.

A conversation between a father and a daughter. 56-year-old Antonio González grew up in Puerto Rico and then moved to Georgia to raise his family, including daughter, Maru González. These days, Maru is a student far from home, but on a recent visit back, she invited her dad to StoryCorps because she wanted to make a confession to him.

The medium of choice of many artists is a brush and a canvas. For others, it’s the hands-on feel of molding clay. Audio artist Nat Slaughter expresses his appreciation of sound as an art-form. This artist profile was produced by WABE’s David Barasoain. Nat Slaughter currently has a sound installation at the Kiang Gallery in Atlanta as part of an exhibit called After the Suburbs.

True Colors Theatre opened a new show this past Friday and WABE’s Lois Reitzes had the show’s director, Kenny Leon, who is also True Colors’ artistic director, in for a conversation that began with the title.
True Colors Theatre presents Broke-ology at the Southwest Arts Center through February 20th.
