Atlanta Lyric Theatre Presents 42nd Street

In the world of theater, if a company announces it’s mounting a production of 42nd Street, you take notice. Based on the 1933 backstage movie musical, 42nd Street spares little in the way of extravagant costumes, sets and big showstopping musical numbers.
The Atlanta Lyric Theatre is one of the latest companies to tackle the production in performances this month at Marietta’s Strand Theatre. WABE’s John Lemley sat down with the musical’s director Brandt Blocker and Jeff McKerley, who plays Julian Marsh. McKerley began by summing up the plot of the show.

Following a tradition begun half a century ago by founding conductor Robert Shaw, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra celebrates the holidays each year with their Christmas with the ASO concert. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is one of the oldest churches in Atlanta, notable for its steadily growing choir, helmed by Trey Clegg. WABE’s Lois Reitzes recently sat down with Clegg for a conversation about the choir and the church itself.

Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts is presenting the first licensed stage production of a holiday favorite admired by puppetry artists and watched by television viewers for nearly fifty years.

When Crystal Williams and Brittany Jean met a few years ago, they found out that they both had lived with foster care parents as teenagers. These days, Crystal and Brittany are best friends and college grads. At StoryCorps, Crystal asked Brittany how she got to where she is today.

Langston Hughes’ 1961 play Black Nativity is seeing its third annual production this year by Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theater. And for the third and final year, actress Kelley Young is portraying Mary in the play. WABE’s Lois Reitzes sat down with the 18-year-old Young before a recent dress rehearsal, to talk about growing up in this role and how her perspective on the Virgin Mary has changed.
