Today, we take a look back at this great Georgia-born songwriter and composer on his birthday.
If you’ve ever sung along to “Skylark” or “Moon River,” then you’re more familiar with Johnny Mercer than you think. Mercer wrote the lyrics to more than a thousand songs, including compositions for movies and Broadway. Mercer also composed music and was a popular singer who recorded his own songs as well as those of others. From the mid 1930’s through the mid 1950’s at least many of the songs Mercer wrote and performed were among the most popular hits of the time.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Announces Independent Label

For the past 37 years, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has been releasing its recordings through the Telarc label, garnering 27 Grammy awards along the way. But then in February of last year, Telarc announced that it would no longer produce new recordings.
Today, the Symphony announces that it will be going into business for itself by establishing a new label, ASO Media. WABE’s Myke Johns paid a visit to Atlanta Symphony president Stanley Romanstein to learn more.

Today, during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, we hear from 42-year-old Ronnie Wheeler. For a few years not so long ago, Ronnie found himself homeless after a medical problem cost him his job. He ended up living and then helping out at Atlanta’s Gateway Center. Through his work there, he met Claudine Forbes, a 22-year-old AmeriCorps volunteer. At StoryCorps, Ronnie told Claudine about one particularly difficult day he had while homeless.

Dali’s Work Uncrated at the High Museum

Transporting priceless works of art and hanging them in a gallery is delicate, sometimes secretive work. For some notable pieces, however, the High Museum of Art invites members of the media for what’s called an uncrating. This past Friday, they uncrated a famous work by Salvador Dali. WABE’s Myke Johns was there to see what was in the box.
