Remembering Ray Charles
Today, September 23rd, marks what would have been the 80th birthday of Georgia native Ray Charles. He’s remembered as an icon of the 50’s made popular in live-on-stage performances, movies, commercials and even more recently on-screen with the Jamie Fox movie adaptation, Ray. But these six years after his death we thought we’d try to see what people were saying about him and what they recall of him, so we sent WABE’s David Barasoain out to ask around.

1906 Atlanta Race Riot
It was on this date back in 1906 that the Atlanta Race Riots occurred. The four days of riots were a combination of growing racial tensions that had been simmering since then end of the American Civil War. It was fueled by rhetoric from white politicians and newspaper accounts about a black crime wave and it led to indiscriminate attacks on blacks. WABE’s David Barasoain has more on the 4-days of the Atlanta Race Riots.

StoryCorps Atlanta - Winslow & Dorothy Jackson
On this StoryCorps Atlanta edition, we introduce you to newlyweds Dorothy and Winslow Jackson. They’re in their 60’s and met at the gym of the Shepherd Center. Both were at the rehab center because both are living with Multiple Sclerosis. The disease affects their muscle control and ability to walk, among other things. At StoryCorps, they talked about life before they met, and that fateful first meeting.
Ice Cream Social
First designated by former President Ronald Reagan in 1984, July is National Ice Cream Month, a time when we take a moment, and a spoon, to honor that creamy frozen treat. There’s perhaps no better way to celebrate than with a good old-fashioned ice cream social, and for the last four years, the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market has hosted just such an event. Here’s a taste.

Oakhurst Sukkah
The Jewish holiday of Sukkot takes place this week, and the Oakhurst community in Decatur is celebrating by building a Sukkah. WABE’s Myke Johns was there during the build yesterday to find out what, exactly, a Sukkah is.
