Fernbank’s Bug Out Festival
Hissing cockroaches, tarantulas, and Georgia’s native scorpians, oh my! Host John Lemley gets up-close-and-personal with some giant insects and arachnids, courtesy of Dr. Maryanne Robinette, Outreach Coordinator for the University of Georgia’s Entomology Department.
This weekend, the Fernbank Museum of Natural History is hosting the Bug Out Festival. It’s part of the 97 Days To Play program, and it features games, treats and bug-themed activities—including a unique hands-on opportunity in which visitors will get a chance to handle and pet bugs from around the world.

The “Perfect” Dog
According to figures from The Spot Society, more than 100,000 animals are brought to metro Atlanta animal shelters each year. Meanwhile, a number of rescue groups are working to find good homes for those dogs and cats. Of course, choosing a canine best friend can be its own adventure. Producer Kate Sweeney recently decided to take the plunge and get a rescue dog herself; she took us along on the journey.

StoryCorps - Mark & Sarah Richards
Evan Richards of Atlanta turns eight months old this Saturday. While he’s not speaking yet, his parents, Mark and Sarah Richards, are talking a lot these days about their own childhoods. At StoryCorps Atlanta, Sarah started out by asking her husband to talk about his own upbringing.
Georgia History - First Electric Trolley
On August 22, 1889, Atlantans had the first chance to ride on the latest mode of mass transit, the electric trolley. Today, Dr. Tim Crimmins tells us more about this historic event. Crimmins is director of The Center for Neighborhood and Metropolitan Studies at Georgia State University.

SOAR Rocket Launch
Southern Area Rocketry, or SOAR, promotes sport rocketry and engineering through regular launches of mid-to-high power rockets around Georgia. WABE’s Myke Johns headed out to Hoschton, Georgia for one such launch, and brought back this story.
