Georgia History: Cyclorama

A “cyclorama” is defined as panoramic painting in the round. You stand in the center of a room and the lifelike work is all around you.
Host John Lemley sat down recently with Georgia State history professor and Director of the Center of Neighborhood and Metropolitan Studies, Dr. Tim Crimmins, to discuss the creation of Atlanta’s famous cyclorama, which depicts a portion of the Battle of Atlanta. He began the conversation by asking him how the massive, circular painting was created—back in 1892.

The latest installment of StoryCorps Atlanta tells the tale of an unusual childhood. Mary Wheeler Martin grew up in Forsyth County in the ’30s and ’40s, and called the county jail home for a few of those years. Her daughter, Vickie Martin, wanted to get the story straight and sat her mom down to ask some questions.

On the occasion of City Café’s first anniversary, John spoke with producers Dave Barasoain and Myke Johns about some of their most memorable moments in putting together the show’s inaugural year.
Listeners shared their memories of the moon landing the week of July 20th. The Literary Death Match was supposed to run that Monday, but was pushed to Wednesday, September 9. And the conversation with Richard Chamberlain, the “King of the Miniseries” turned King of Spamalot, took place on Tuesday March 17 .
