This Sunday at 10:00pm WABE’s companion TV station, PBA 30 is airing an original show which focuses on some of Atlanta’s best mom & pop restaurants, stalwarts of the dining scene that have been serving satisfied, loyal customers for years. The guide for these excursions is veteran cook and corndog maven, Jim Stacy. He recently talked with WABE’s John Lemley about “Get Delicious! Atlanta’s Hidden Restaurant Treasures.”

Scad Open Studio Night

In 2005, the Savannah College of Art & Design opened an Atlanta campus in the city’s Midtown district. The following year SCAD acquired the 100-year-old Atlanta College of Art, which helped greatly to expand both the school’s curriculum and studio space. This year SCAD is unveiling a new festival that celebrates the School of Fine Arts. One facet of this festival is an Open Studio Night being held tonight at 7. To preview tonight’s event, we’ve stopped by SCAD to talk with some of the students whose work is being displayed and chat with the Chair of Printmaking Department, Robert Brown.

Veteran’s Day Georgia

Veterans Day — what was armorist’s day — is held each November 11th. Back in 1918 on the 11th day of the 11th hour of the 11th month an armistice agreement was signed that ended the fighting of World War ONE. Here in Georgia there are over 250-thousand active and reserve service members and nearly 800-thousand veterans. Remembering the service of veterans is what the day is about. For some it’s a day off work … for others it’s parades and for others the day is visiting monuments. Recently, WABE’s David Barasoain went out to the veteran’s plaza near the capitol building to see some of the monuments and dedicated to Georgia’s war vets.

Sesame Street 40th Anniversary

On this day 40 years ago - November 10th 1969 - a small unassuming TV show made its premiere on Public Television. Today, though, the show is the longest running children’s program on US television. We’re talking - of course - about Sesame Street. And on today’s anniversary we thought it would be nice to see what you still remember from the show. It’s not just our “question of the week” it’s also a question that producer Dave Barasoain recently asked people during a visit to the High Museum of Art.

Song of the South

November 12th 1946 marks the anniversary of the World Premier of Disney’s feature Song of the South, which took place at Atlanta’s Fox Theater. The film is based on the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris. Hoping to gain some insight into the film and the controversy surrounding it, we spoke with Harris’ great-great-great grandson, Lain Shakespeare, Executive Director of the Wren’s Nest, the house museum based in Harris’ West End home.

Margaret Mitchell Apartment

November 8th marked the one hundred and ninth birth anniversary of Atlanta’s most widely-read author, Margaret Mitchell. To commemorate the occasion, WABE’s Myke Johns took a tour of Mitchell’s apartment, preserved as part of the Atlanta History Center’s Margaret Mitchell House and Museum on Peachtree Street.
