Stamp Man

Flag day is this Sunday and you may have noticed that the new 44 cent stamps feature an American Flag. Now, while many quietly grumbled about the price increase, one fellow just couldn’t help but smile. He’s a photographer from Duluth, GA and that new stamp featuring the flag comes from him. Rick Barrentine is his name and we spoke him earlier about the photo that eventually became a stamp and what makes this image of a flag unique. Incidentally he was honored last week for his work at a ceremony in Washington DC.
Classical Music
This week’s question on City Cafe.
All week we’ve been asking listeners “If you wanted to introduce someone to classical music what piece would you play them, and why?” Here are some of the listeners that phoned in.
City Cafe would like to thank all callers who phoned in their answers.

Anne Frank In The World
Anne Frank, the Jewish girl whose diary became a symbol of so much lost in the holocaust, would have been 80 years old on June 12th. Her diary, published after her death in 1945, documents her experiences hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, has been translated into 67 languages and has become one of the most widely read books in the world. Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945, a travelling exhibit chronicling the life and wartime experiences of Anne Frank is now on display free of charge at the Old Courthouse in Decatur. We were recently given a tour by Sandra Craine, a coordinator with the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust. The tour started with a quote from the Rev. Martin Niemöller, a Lutheran pastor who spent eight years imprisoned by the Nazis…

Misrach Beach
The High Museum of Art has a new display of large scale high quality photos of people at the beach. The photographs were taken over a four year period from a single location in Hawaii. The photos are unique because they’re from a birds eye view of people swimming or sunbathing. Recently WABE’s David Barasoain spoke with the photographer Richard Misrach about his work.

Rapido!
The Atlanta Chamber Players and the Antinori Foundation have joined forces this summer to challenge Southern composers to write new works for chamber ensemble. It’s a competition called Rapido!, and there’s a reason for the name. The composers who choose to compete only have two weeks in which to write their pieces. We spoke with Paula Peace, the Artistic Managing director and pianist of the Atlanta Chamber Players, about this unusual music challenge.
We look forward to checking back in later in the summer for the results.
