Elementary Teacher of the Year: her mentor, the late urban education expert Dr. Asa Hilliard, heavily influenced The APS Elementary School Teacher of the Year, Charon Kirkland. His wise words encourage her daily to seek the genius inside each of her students at Woodson Elementary School.

-APS Superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall was named Georgia Superintendent of the Year
-Gideons Elementary School principal Armstead Salters was named principal of the year by the National Alliance of Black School Educators
-Members of the Beijing Opera performs at North Atlanta High School
-The math & science fair at Burgess-Peterson Elementary attracts a hedgehog, a boa constrictor and a very large millipede!
-Twenty-six APS Schools were recognized by the Georgia Department of Education for high performance or great improvement
-APS 11th graders outperformed their peers on the Georgia High School Writing Test
Middle School Teacher of the Year: In its second year as Atlanta¡¦s single-gender middle school for girls, the Coretta Scott King Young Women¡¦s Leadership Academy is also home to the Middle School Teacher of the Year. Cheryl Parker brings the professionalism she honed during her eight-years in the corporate arena to teaching mathematics.
Profiles in Excellence: Truett Cathy & Glenda Hatchett: Before he became the king of the chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy was a student attending Atlanta Public Schools during the Great Depression. Fellow alumna Judge Glenda Hatchett recalls the impact of her years as an APS student.
