2017 Atlanta Public Schools 'State of the District'
Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Meria Carstarphen continued her tradition of performative ‘Sate of the District’ speeches Friday.
Carstarphen – who joined the district in 2014 – spoke from a pool deck at Hollis Innovation Academy, while a crowd, including school board members, looked on from seats on the floor of the emptied pool below, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The newspaper reports that the crowd of several hundred people were led through the shower rooms before climbing down stairs to the seats on the sloping pool floor.
To match the “homecoming” theme of the address, Carstarphen wore a tracksuit and sneakers. She made her entrance behind cheerleaders and a marching band, WABE reports.
This isn’t the first time Carstarphen has given the event a theatrical feel. Last year’s speech, held at the auditorium at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, included music from the Broadway musical “Hamilton” and other performances by students.
