Preserving Puppets

In 2007, the family of Jim Henson gave a large collection of puppets, props, and costumes to the Center for Puppetry Arts. The collection spanned the years of Henson’s career and included pieces from fan favorites such as The Muppets, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, the Dark Crystal and more. Many of the pieces, however, had seen no use nor had received any upkeep since their time on screen, and most showed signs of age. In some cases, deterioration was severe.

The Center for Puppetry Arts tasked two puppet builders with conserving the collection, halting the deterioration and preparing the collection for display in a brand new wing of the Center. We caught up with Russ Vick and Vito Leanza as they reached the completion of their dream job.
