WABE Weekend On-Air Host/Reporter

Summary

This is a professional position primarily serving as a week-end radio host and reporter for WABE90.1FM. The position is a full-time position. The work week is expected to run from Friday to Tuesday, but is subject to change as decided by management.

This position requires solid experience in hosting and crafting informative reports of local and state news, as well as experience in producing stories consistent with NPR style, in-depth, local feature stories and interviews. Air shift will normally be Weekend Edition Saturday/WESAT and Weekend Edition/WESUN but will be subject to change depending on the needs of the News Director and station management. Air shift may also include weekday mornings, afternoon/evenings, holidays and limited news related appearances on PBA’s TV station.

Accountabilities

  • Serves as WABE weekend host, presenting local news, interviews and feature reports in the public radio style.
  • Works in cooperation with the News Director, to compile stories and live on-air presentation of local content. This will be a combination of in-studio production, interviewing, coverage of special news assignments as directed, working with technical equipment related to broadcasting, participating on-air fundraising and performing other duties as assigned by the News Director.
  • Works under the direction of the News Director to research, write, and produce local news features, interviews and long-form public affairs programs.
  • Serves on behalf of the station as a spokesperson and or representative at assigned station events or other community related forums.
  • Participate in fund drives and other special fundraising activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by News Director and Station Management.

Knowledge and Skills

  • WABE 90.1FM, the NPR station in Atlanta is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and personal broadcast journalist- to join its staff as weekend host and reporter.
  • We are searching for a journalist who wants to actively take part as we expand our broadcast news mission to not only our metropolitan Atlanta audience, but to greater Georgia and the rest of the nation.
  • BA/BS Degree and/or applicable newsroom experience.
  • One year experience as a public broadcast radio host and or at least two years broadcast journalism experience in radio or television.
  • Familiarity with WESAT and WESUN or ATC or ME’s format and clock are desirable, but not necessary.
  • Strong editorial skills are a necessity.
  • Applicants must be able to conduct both live and taped interviews during on-air-shifts as well as generate story ideas, and put together both spot news and feature news reports.
  • Seeking applicant with ability to quickly respond to rapidly changing news events, and who can handle breaking local news both during their regular on-air-shifts and as a host of special programming.
  • This position will have high visibility within metropolitan Atlanta.
  • Applicants will be expected to take part in on-air pledge drives as well as community-related events.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets journals, books and newspapers.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to apply basic mathematical equations.

  • Ability to define problems collects data/information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
